Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, Wave 1 2021: Manufacturing, Planning and Product Information Management Perks4 min read

We have already discussed what’s new in Wave 1 2021 for Asset Management and Inventory and logistics here, so now we will move on to manufacturing, planning, and product information perks and what to expect should you choose to implement ones.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing features will enhance the process by improving mission-critical manufacturing tasks as well as avoiding any interruptions helping companies streamline the whole process and deliver a better experience to their teams.

Production Floor Execution Interface: Asset Management Capabilities

The solution aims to help organizations monitor the production floor equipment ensuring it is maintained properly, workforce safety, and minimal downtime. Employees are able to record maintenance requests, record/edit machine downtime, and more.

The Default Reservation Principle: Override

The feature will provide further flexibility while allocating materials that do not need a physical reservation prior to starting production or batch order. It will set a default reservation principle for every item model group.

Production Control: Saved Views

SImply gives your team a collection of saved, simplified views (production orders list page, production order details page, etc.) for manufacturing providing speed for the work process, since these include fields most often used.

Scale Units: Manufacturing Execution

Manufacturing processes’ resilience has been improved by extending your cloud hub with cloud-scale units that execute manufacturing workloads. Each workload pulls possession of specific execution-related data at a selected site. Improved floor execution interface, support interruption-free processing, job management system, and more.

Production Floor Execution Interface

A more agile way has been created for workers to find their next production job through the updated interface, enabling them to search & filter jobs – being optimized for scanning.

Scale Units: Report As Finished & Put Away

Report-as-finished functionality has been added to scale units functionality (with the support for putting away those products which are finished), including batch order support to allow reporting on co-products and byproducts.

Quality Orders: Process Automation Flows

This feature uses Microsoft Power Apps or Internet of Things (IoT) sensor signals to invoke a Power Automate flow to drive business processes. It includes a template for the event-driven creation of quality orders on manufactured items.

Planning

Planning Optimization: Coverage Time Fence Support

The solution helps organizations to ensure planning optimization generates planned orders only for the longest lead time plus buffer, which eventually assists to avoid any advice that covers a long-term forecast. High data volume and system performance have been improved creating near real-time experience with insights into requirements changes.

Purchase Requisition Support

The feature lets you automatically create planned purchase orders needed, removing the manual step whereas you need to purchase orders based on purchase requisitions. However, unfortunately, the feature is only released in the US, Europe, UK, Australia, and Canada, for now.

Planned Orders: Saved Views

Simply provides a collection of simplified views for planned orders (list page, details page) with the most often used fields to streamline organizations’ work processes.

Forecast Submodel Support

Demand forecast input now can be included from multiple submodels linked to the forecast model during master planning to let the system create supply suggestions and cover aggregated forecast demand from multiple submodels.

Order Firming With Filtering

The solution aims to establish logical criteria for selecting which planned orders to the firm, allowing you to preview which one was selected, being run, or scheduled as a batch job.

Negative Days Support

The feature is used to extend the acceptable delay in favor of existing supply orders avoiding the creation of extra supply orders. In other words, it considers negative days settings defined for coverage groups.

Product Information Management

Product information management shall bring incremental improvements on product master data, product variants, and engineering, simplifying the task by ensuring product master data is complete.

Change Management

The solution lets organizations track products’ changes as they move through their lifecycle with the ability to convert standard products into engineering products as well as apply the benefits of versioning and engineering change management to their existing products.

Improved Variant Suggestions

Variant suggestion functionality has been improved to bring better performance and usability for teams that have got a high number of product dimension combinations. The process enhances productivity by improving the relevance of generated variant suggestions.

Product Readiness Checks

The feature helps to ensure that all required data is fully set up before a product starts to be used in transactions. Considering shrinking product lifecycles, the feature shall help to improve the quality, reliability, and safety of the product ensuring your company has no mistakes prior to the launch of the product’s transaction.
